A group of early-career researchers at Stellenbosch University has recently completed the first workshop in The Art of Research: Full Package, a six-part training series developed by Jive Media Africa to support academics in communicating their work beyond the academy.
Hosted in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s Postgraduate Research and Capacity Development Office, the programme responds to a growing need for researchers to share their knowledge with wider audiences — from policy makers and industry professionals to community stakeholders and the general public. The series offers practical skills in science communication strategy, popular writing, media engagement, personal branding, pitching, and public presentations.
Michael Meyer, one of the participants, said the training was both practical and empowering:
“It helped me develop a clear engagement plan to communicate my research beyond academia — reaching people in other sectors, from the private industry to broader communities — and making the findings more accessible and impactful. I’m also more confident about using social media, participating in panels, and applying what I’ve learned immediately in my work.”
Unlike traditional academic development courses, The Art of Research focuses on hands-on learning, peer connection, and real-world application. Each module runs over a day, with 4–6 hours of contact time, tailored to fit academic schedules.
This training is part of a broader effort to equip South African researchers with the tools toengage meaningfully with society ensure that their work contributes to positive, tangible change.
